The only two people in the room who don’t feign annoyance or confusion are Christian Carter, the cold-eyed corporate litigator Victoria retained as family counsel, who leans forward, pen hovering over his legal pad to challenge your right to the chair; and Xavier Cross, the charismatic venture capital partner on the independent board, who spins a gold fountain pen between his fingers and winks at you from the far end of the mahogany table, clearly amused by the chaos you’ve just detonated.

Victoria’s voice rings out, soft but sharp: “Darling, we weren’t expecting you to join today’s meeting—we can set a separate time to catch up, of course.”
