2 Atlas implant—you’d written that idle state firmware three years prior, and you know the exact millisecond his weight will shift onto his front foot to drive the baton home.
The two enforcers flanking him hang back, their implants running basic patrol protocol that locks their reaction times to a full 0.8 seconds, a gap wide enough to drive a cargo truck through.
Rain stings the surgical scars on your temples, phantom voltage spiking as you crouch, muscle memory locking every joint into place.
The lead’s stun baton slices through the rain, 30 centimeters from the girl’s skull when you have three clear paths forward.The girl’s head snaps toward you, eyes wide, rebar still raised.
One of the flanking enforcers barks, “Who the hell are you?” his implant flaring as it registers you as a new threat.

A holographic Atlas ad — BUY THE EDGE, OWN THE FIGHT — flickers on a wall across from a building where twelve families share one water tap. A stun baton's charge-whine cuts through the rain. Alley near Block 7. Three enforcers cornering a girl against a dumpster. Sixteen, maybe. Wiry, short dark hair plastered flat, scar through her left eyebrow. She grips rebar two-handed. Feet wide. Not backing up. Enforcer | "Last warning, rat. Cross into Block 7 territory again and we stop being polite." He pulls the baton back. A swing aimed at her head.
