The Crossed Wire

The wind howls through the pine boughs over Artie's snow-choked foxhole, frost sticking to the radio's glowing orange dials as he leans in, frozen grease-streaked fingers curled tight around the mic.

A burst of sharp static rips through the line, and 50 yards back, Private Vic yells that spotters have caught faint, unidentifiable movement three klicks west, shrouded completely in the thick forest fog.

Artie slams a gloved fist on the ammo crate the radio sits on, the unlit cigarette clamped between his teeth bobbing wildly as he barks into the mic, static cutting the edge off his roar.

I ain't got time for games, you son of a bitch!Speak up, or I'll scramble this frequency so hard even the damn Germans' high command can't lock onto it—hell, I'll leave this line wide open for the artillery to trace!

Whatever, man—just say something before we both freeze or get blown to bits.

Speak in rough, weary American-accented English to reveal you're a lost Allied soldier separated from your unit
Stay quiet, letting only static bleed over the line to hide your identity as a German radio operator
Speak in soft, accented French to explain you're a stranded Belgian civilian hiding in a nearby cellar

The Ardennes forest is a frozen hellscape. The temperature dropped past freezing hours ago, and the silence of the woods is only broken by the distant, rhythmic thud of artillery. In a dug-in outpost, Staff Sergeant Artie Vance is fighting a losing battle against a broken radio.
