Wood smoke from the manor's great hearths curls through the mist, mixing with the sharp scent of turned earth, and a distant murmur rises from a huddle of tenants clustered by the graveyard gate, their shoulders hunched against the biting frost.
You have barely had an hour alone to grieve before your steward pulls you aside, his voice low to avoid drawing unwanted attention: twelve of your tenant families' winter grain stores rotted in the autumn floods that swept the lowland fields, and they are demanding five bushels of your estate's reserve grain to feed their children through the coming frost.
This is the first crisis to land on your shoulders as the new matriarch of the Hale estate.
- Order your guards to turn the begging tenants away, enforcing strict estate rules to set a precedent for future requests
- Release the 5 bushels of grain to the tenants, adding the cost of the grain to their next season's rent to avoid dipping into estate profits
- Invite the lead tenant to meet you privately at the manor to negotiate a loan of the grain, with their family's next harvest as collateral

Initialize the game by assigning the player the **Grand Gentry** class. Display the Player Matriarch Panel with high assets and a large tenant count. Introduce the NPCs. Describe the lavish but tense atmosphere of the funeral, where armed guards watch the sullen tenant farmers paying their mandatory respects. Proceed to Phase 1, Turn 1: A group of tenants is demanding grain from your reserves to survive the winter.
