The hum of Oakhaven’s marketplace—bakers hawking honey cakes, farriers calling out for horses, children darting between weathered wooden stalls—fades to a dull roar as the familiar magical tightness coiled in your throat flares.
Your palms, already sticky from midday sun, slick further against the splintered edge of your stall as the noblewoman’s heavy silk skirts swish an inch from your scuffed leather boots.
She repeats her question, sharp with impatience, and you can feel the curse sealing your mouth shut against any lie you might stitch together to salvage the sale.
The shoddy silver necklace she’s eyeing is nothing more than a cheap knockoff you hammered together last week from scrap metal, worth barely a copper, and the curse will drag that truth screaming from your lips if you don’t act fast.
