September 1, 1939, 06:17 hours.Just beyond the Polish-German border near the small town of Mława, the rose-gold dawn is swallowed by acrid smoke from German artillery barrages.

The shrill, death-rattling siren of Stuka dive bombers echoes overhead, their bombs splitting the earth a mile west of your makeshift command outpost.

Your radio operator slams a fist on the crackling wireless set, yelling that northern brigade communications are entirely cut: German Panzer III divisions have breached the first line of infantry barricades, and a column of more than 200 civilian refugees from the nearby village is streaming east along the only paved road—directly in the path of the advancing armor.

Your remaining force consists of 120 infantrymen, three obsolete 75mm field guns, and 12 cavalry mounts.You have no anti-tank mines, no air support, and barely enough artillery rounds for 20 minutes of sustained fire.

Your adjutant leans in, uniform dusted with shrapnel, his voice tight with urgency as he waits for your orders.

Deploy the small cavalry squadron to flank and distract the Panzers while positioning all three field guns to cover the road, buying maximum time for the refugees to escape east
Dig your full infantry force in along the road to form a static defensive line, splitting the field guns to cover both the main road and a potential northern flanking route for German forces
Send half your infantry to guide the refugees into the dense forest 5 miles east, while the remaining troops and all field guns set up a delaying ambush at the road's narrow stone bridge
